"Top 11 Reading Traffic Tips That Help Predict The Future!"

Most drivers don't even try to read traffic... they simply react to the one or two vehicles ahead of them or worse yet, react to the vehicle next to them.

And for a lot of the drivers that do look ahead, many misinterpret what they see. Misreading traffic can and does cause severe traffic congestion and accidents.

There's three levels to 'reading traffic'. The first is knowing different ways to see traffic farther ahead and then utilizing them. The second is knowing what to look for. And the third is knowing what the information means and what can be done with it.

1)      Look around the left and/or right. (This may seem simple, yet many drivers only concentrate on and react to the one vehicle directly ahead. Moving to the left or right is often beneficial and necessary.)

2)      Look through the windshield of the vehicle ahead. (This again is common knowledge for many drivers but still far too many drivers don't utilize this simple technique.)

3)      Looking for semis and other large and/or slower moving vehicles. (Noticing these vehicles and knowing how to 'drive around them' is vital to having stress free, congestion free rush hour traffic... Semi drivers are some of the better, more skilled drivers on the road! )

4)      Use hills. (As the top of a hill is being approached, seeing underneath the vehicle ahead is almost always possible. And when on top of the hill, seeing dozens of vehicles (both going down and coming up the other side) is often available.

5)      Use curves in the road. (Using the curves in the road is a highly beneficial way to view large numbers of vehicles and more importantly their gaps.)

6)      Gap Technology. (Understanding and reading gaps properly, and knowing what they tell you about that driver is a crucial step in preventing, eliminating and avoiding congestion and accidents... nearly all drivers misinterpret what a good gap is when 'reading traffic'.)

7)      Observing lane changes. (How, when and why a driver changes lanes communicates that driver's skills, confidence and awareness. This tells you a lot about that driver and thus can predict his future actions far in advance.

8)      Learn about other drivers to predict their moves. (We are creatures of habit! Notice how one driver responds to another driver's acceleration, deceleration and lane change. Drivers will often react the same way over and over and over again... it becomes very predictable.)

9)      Notice Shadows. (Noticing shadows is often a valid for of 'reading traffic' that increase confidence and control... especially when combined with 'gap technology'.)

10)   Change lanes to observe both lanes of traffic ahead of  and behind you. (Combine this with 'gap technology', 'shadows' and other reading traffic techniques and it becomes very valuable. Not only does it provide you with a way to observe others driving but it also provides others with information about you, and it gets you noticed!)

11)   Reflections (There are several forms of 'reflections' that can help you 'read traffic' such as off of vehicles in adjacent lanes, tale lights and break lights off of the windshield of the vehicle in front of you and off of the pavement underneath the vehicle in front of you, off of the concrete dividers and even off of department store windows. The same can be said about reflections of headlights of the same vehicles. Again, understanding 'gap technology' is very important in order to fully benefit from these techniques.)
